Territories
I began working on an awning for Latitude restaurant a few weeks ago. I liked the idea of working from images of aerial views of topography as a play on the idea of collage-spaces that are relative to one another, but significantly different. Latitude began as a California-french restaurant, so the idea of expansiveness beyond one particular set of conditions was important. The juxtaposition of shapes and textures creates interesting relationships that question the identities of each space, and that create a new textural landscape when combined. While the final design was formal, the exercise got me thinking about the possibility of using more recognizable imagery.

Thesis workIn the fall of 2005, I began to explore the potential of a jacquard woven fabric to function as a focal point within a space designated for meditation or contemplation. The fabric installation would function to assist the architectural environment in offering a respite from the tensions of social experience.
By installing the lengths of panels next to one another, but at different depths from the wall, I hoped to communicate the experience of time and light.
